Whatever your course of study, you always have the possibility of completing part of your studies – a few months or even a full year – abroad. The first thing to do is therefore to contact the international relations department of your institution to find out the procedure to follow.
The calendar: mobility is being prepared from the fall
Around October-November, the international relations office begins to organize information meetings to present the different types of mobility.
From December or January, students start to put together their application files in order to leave the following academic year, in September. The procedure is the same whether you are leaving for a semester or a full year. Don’t waste time and be careful not to miss the boat: if the calendar is so precise, it is above all because the establishments are constrained by the foreign partner establishments which must anticipate arrivals . The procedures are long but you are supported in your process until departure, don’t worry.
The schedule for internships abroad
For those who intend to do an internship, the schedule is more flexible since it is up to you to find your company. You do not have to limit yourself to the partner establishments of your school.
Create a file to study abroad
You will need to provide three documents: transcripts since you joined the training, a cover letter (in French and/or in the language of the target country) and the draft study contract (courses you want to follow). You may also be asked to provide a CV, a language certificate and proof of your previous professional experience (for an internship in particular).
Take the time to gather all these documents and be rigorous in your cover letter, it will be decisive in the evaluation of your application. Indicate your objectives and what this experience should bring you on a personal and professional level.
Make your wishes for studies in Europe or internationally
This is probably the key step! First, choose your destination carefully. Depending on your training, you will not have access to the same countries or the same institutions. Find out about the programs: Erasmus+, or the schemes outside Europe or specific to certain countries such as the United States or Canada with which French institutions often have partnerships.
Most often, you can make several wishes, which also requires multiplying your applications. It is better to choose several to put all the chances on your side, because the selection can be tough.
Among the top destinations: the United Kingdom , North America and countries bordering France. Be strategic in your choices and do research on host universities. Also consider asking for a semester rather than a year abroad, which is easier to satisfy.
Selection criteria for following a mobility program
One of the most important criteria is grades. You must have validated your last years of studies (obtained 10/20) but also the current year. Be careful, some countries, particularly in North America, may be more demanding on transcripts.
While an algorithm can sometimes rank students based on their transcripts to assign them destinations accordingly, more often than not, universities pay attention to students’ motivation and plans.
The institutions affirm that students who already have difficulty following courses in French are less likely to go abroad, but apart from the academic level, there must also be a coherent link with the program that the student wants to follow abroad.
